Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor!

SO MUCH RADIO!

I’ve gotten pretty behind on posting my shows, so I have a ton to post today. Life has been kind of crazy and busy lately. I wanted to get all these online but I’m not feeling up to the task of explaining them all too, so I’m just going to leave you with the shows themselves. Enjoy!

Super Awesome Music Times: California Theme!

Here is my last episode of Super Awesome Music Times! I left for California for two weeks just after this, so I decided to do a show of California-themed songs! It was pretty awesome, if I do say so myself. Something interesting I noticed when doing it though is most of the songs were not very positive! So that was a little surprising, especially since I think California is great! :) Also, first time I realized that Snoop Dog is in the song California Gurls, and is just in the background like a creeper. Enjoy!

Move Your Ass 7/3/13 and What It Is 7/5/13

Two shows for you today: the most recent Move Your Ass that I hosted, and my first time ever hosting What It Is! What it Is is WCBN’s funk, soul, and R&B show that runs every Friday from 8-10pm. This was my first time hosting the show and I had tons of fun with it. I tried to play a good mix of danceable funk, slower soul, from a variety of different time periods. And in the most recent episode of Move Your Ass, I explored a few exercise records, including an official US government record!

Move Your Ass 6/19, Subbing 6/21, Yazoo City 7/1, and Super Awesome Music Times 7/2

Lots o’ music for ya today! Catching up on a few miscellaneous shows I hadn’t gotten to adding yet, like Move Your Ass and part of a show that I subbed. I only subbed part of the show because I was sick, and then Michael came in to take over (the last few tracks are what he played, but were records I picked out I believe). For Move Your Ass I experimented with speeds and layering, with a hilarious and slightly disturbing result. Also my second go at the pre WWII blues show, Yazoo City Calling! And my latest episode of Super Awesome Music Times, where I plan a wide range of things including spoken word, new music, old music, fake science, real science, all sorts of stuff! So enjoy!

Super Awesome Music Times: The Shins, Rilo Kiley, and more!

THREE, count ‘em, THREE episodes of Super Awesome Music Times with Mary for you all today! Alright! I did two themed shows and one regular freeform show in the past three weeks.

On June 11th my theme was The Shins. I was looking at my records as I was about to head over to the radio station, saw my Shins albums and thought “hmm, it would be fun to do an entire Shins show!” And so I did! I decided to play most of all their studio albums and go in order of how I discovered their music. It was really fun to do! And I thought it was so fun I was inspired to do my Rilo Kiley show, which I did the following week, with the same style of following the path of how I originally heard the music. The Rilo Kiley episode was especially fun for me too because they have such a difference in styles from the first album to the last, in addition to each album has a very distinct style in itself as well. So it was really cool being able to hear those differences right next to each other.

This week on June 25th I did another regular just freeform style show. I played a lot of fun music, including some Marvin Gaye and Louis Armstrong I had never heard before, as well as a good amount of new and local music.

Enjoy!

First Ever "Yazoo City Calling"!

I had my first time as host for the blues show Yazoo City Calling today! The show focuses on pre-World War II blues music. I had a ton of fun with it and was excited to learn more about this style of music, since I don’t really listen to it much. Got several requests, including some from my brother (thanks Jona!). Anyway, it was a good time! I hope you’ll enjoy it!

Three episodes of Move Your Ass!

Well it’s summertime in Ann Arbor! That means no more sports on WCBN, and instead we have everyone’s favorite half-hour workout radio show: Move Your Ass! Yesssss. I’ve done 3 episodes of it in the past week, and by golly they’ve been wonderful. Of course by wonderful I mean funny, strange, and sometimes mildly disturbing! Yay! I found some real gems for these shows including Richard Simmons, Mousercise, and Strawberry Shortcake. Enjoy!

Super Awesome Music Times! 5/28/13 (Tom Waits!) and 6/4/13

Two new episodes of Super Awesome Music Times with Mary! On May 28th I did an entire show dedicated to Tom Waits. I have realized recently how much I love Tom Waits, and how impressed I am with the variety of styles in his music. I also have wanted to get more familiar with his music. So, I did a whole show of Tom Waits and played at least one song from each of his albums. It was a really cool show to do, because I read up on him a bit and listened to a lot of his music that I had never heard before. Yesterday I did another freeform show, with not much direction really. Even though I was feeling very un-inspired when I first got to the station, it ended up being a very enjoyable show I thought. I also got to hear some new songs from artists I really like, such as She and Him and Iron and Wine.

Just Folkin' Around 5/25/13

Also did another episode of Just Folkin’ Around last weekend! It went fairly well. I had a lot of requests and calls, which was nice but also kind of stressful! Especially since I got one caller who wanted to talk my ear off and called a few different times, haha. I also ended up playing an 80s song that was requested without realizing it was totally not folk at all…oops! But that’s ok! It was still another good time with folk music. Hope you will enjoy it.

Super Awesome Music Times 5/21/13

This week I pretty much stuck to artists that I know pretty well, but haven’t necessarily listened to in a while. I also explored some songs that were unfamiliar to me from artists I am somewhat familiar with, like Mirah. I stayed a bit late during this show because the next DJ didn’t show up (he didn’t realize that he was put on the summer schedule! Oops!) so I played a good chunk of an Alice in Wonderland album which is super creepy! A good show I thought overall; I had fun! Tune in tomorrow for a special episode: Tom Waits!! Should be awesoooooome!

Final Episode of Transformations and first episode of Super Awesome Music Times with Mary!

I have two shows for you today: the final installment of Transformations as well as the first episode of my new show, Super Awesome Music Times with Mary, heh heh.

For the last show of Transformations I did 3 hours dedicated to Feist. I had been listening to her newest album, Metals, a lot more lately and was really impressed by it, and started to really realize how amazing she is. I love that she has the same general kind of style, but her three album are very distinct from each other. It also gave me the chance to read up a bit on Feist and I found some other music groups and projects she was part of. I also found out she had an album BEFORE Let it Die that is now out of print, which I was very surprised by. Of course, after listening to the album, I can understand why it isn’t in print anymore…Anyway, it was tons of fun and I played all three of her major albums, almost completely (had to cut Metals short because I ran out of time).

I started a brand-new show this week! I didn’t have a name for it at the time, but yesterday I came up with Super Awesome Music Times, which I think is funny and appropriate for how I am with my shows. My new show is from 1-3pm on Tuesdays, though this time I stayed a little over 3 hours to help cover someone who was out of town. I did a free-form show that included a bunch of very different styles of music, from The Beatles, to funk, to the new Vampire Weekend album, to Spanish Renaissance, to the band Renaissance! It was pretty great. Enjoy!

Just Folkin' Around 4/13/13 & Pan African Heartbeat 4/14/13

Two posts in one day! Wow! I forgot to include the last couple specialty shows that I’ve done in my last post. So here they are! I did another episode of Just Folkin’ around, which was really great. Just Folkin’ around is one of my favorite specialty shows to do because it allows me to play a lot of music that I know and like to listen to, and to re-discover music I haven’t listened to in a while. I also did another episode of Pan African Heartbeat. Enjoy!

Transformations 4/10/13, 4/17/13, and 4/24/13

Hi all! I’ve got a triple-treat for you today! My last three episodes of my radio show, Transformations. It’s been a really fun three weeks at the radio station, and busy outside the radio station (hence the taking three weeks to put these up!).

For my show on 4/10 I did a usual free-form style. I played some rockabilly, some soundtracks, some songs I love, and some songs I was new to! It was a good time.

On 4/17 I did a bit of a theme for the first half of the show. I played the entire album of The Kinks “A Soap Opera”, one of my favorites from The Kinks. I felt it was one of those albums that needs to be listened to the whole way through, so I played it that way! Then after that album I played a bunch of stuff I know and love, as well as a few request songs and some that I picked out that were familiar artists to me but new songs. I also got several calls from a man that really loved that I was playing The Kinks and was telling me all about old Elvis music and how I should listen to it. He talked to me for at least 10 minutes! It was pretty cool.

On 4/24 I did another free-form show. I played a lot of Renaissance, who I’ve recently decided I’m deeply in love with! I’ll probably be playing more of them in the future. And again some old, some new, some familiar, some not.

So listen away! I hope you will have as much fun as I did!

Transformations 4/3/13

I’m posting this one extremely on time this week! Yay! So I did another freeform show today for Transformations. I had a fun time with it and a lot of the show had similar types of songs, which I just happened upon doing, which is kind of cool. The first few songs I picked out weren’t too great, but I tried something new so that’s good.

Transformations 2/27/13 (Beatle Mania!!) and 3/13/13 and Radiozilla 2/24/13

Hi all! It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything so I apologize for that! But, the upside to that is now I have, not one, but THREE shows for your listening pleasure! Two episodes of Transformations and one episode of Radiozilla (an East Asia show).

Pan African Heartbeat 2/17/13 and Just Folkin' Around 2/23/13

I have a couple of specialty radio shows that I hosted this past week! On the 17th I did another episode of Pan African Heartbeat, which was when fundraiser was still happening. Today (the 23rd) I did my first episode of Just Folkin’ Around, which is Saturdays 9-10am. I really enjoyed the folk show.

Transformations 2/13/13 and 2/20/13

Hi all! Got two new radio shows for you. The one from 2/13 was during our fundraiser, so it’s longer than usual and has a lot of fun talking, and a lot of the theme to The Price is Right, and a lot of songs about phone calls and money! Plus I did the whole show with another DJ, Pratt, who shares my time-slot with me.

Transformations! 1/30/13 (Winter theme!) & 2/6/13

Hello all! Here’s the latest 2 episodes of my radio show! It took me a while to get them up because I’ve been having some problems with downloading them, sadly! So, as a side-effect of that, there’s some skipping going on partway through the winter show. It doesn’t sound too bad, but it is noticeable. So sorry about that!

First Episode of My New Show, Transformations!

Hello again! I started my new radio show this week, which I will have for the rest of the semester. I share a timeslot with one of the other WCBN DJs and I have the 2nd half: 12:30-2pm. Our show name is Transformations, which Pratt came up with and I liked as well. My first week I just explored the WCBN library and found some fun music from several different sections.

Pan African-Heartbeat 11/4 and The Latin Show 11/18 & 12/2

Hello again! It’s been a while since I have posted in here, and in that time I have done 3 different hour long specialty shows on WCBN. One more Pan-African Heartbeat and 2 of The Latin Show. It’s been fun to explore the Latin and African sections of the station. Enjoy!

Pan-African Heartbeat 11/4:

Pan African Heartbeat 9/30/12

Hello again lovely readers! I do not have my own radio show this semester, unfortunately. My schedule was not open enough to fit one in. However, I did sign up for a few shows that have rotating hosts! So you can hear my on the radio at least a few times this semester. So here’s my first one: an episode of Pan African Heartbeat.

Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor! 8/23/2012 (Misheard/misunderstood lyrics!)

Another episode for ya! I was very excited for this one. I had been compiling a list of songs for this episode for over a month, and finally felt like I had enough for it! I had tons of fun with it. I have a lot of songs from friends and family and songs from my childhood, so many that I have a connection to and was excited to share with others.

Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor! 8/16/2012 (Space! The final frontier)

This week I had a theme of SPACE! Yes, all space-themed music and clips! I was really really excited for this show and had a lot of fun with it! Thank you to my sister, Kathryn, who came up with the idea and contributed some song ideas as well! :D I think it turned out quite well. I did songs in sections where I tried to have related subjects.

Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor! 8/2/12 and 8/9/12

Been a while since I’ve posted, so I have two shows for you, and another one that I will be doing tomorrow/tonight! Yay! So these two didn’t have much of a theme, more just exploring the library at WCBN, which is quite fun. Enjoy!

8/2/12:

Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor! 7/19/2012 and 7/26/2012 (Soundtracks!)

I slacked off last week and didn’t get my show up, so now I have two shows for you! On the 19th I put all of the music that I have on my computer into winamp and hit random, and then I played what came up! I did make an exception of not allowing any repeat artists, so I just deleted songs if it was a repeat. On the 26th I had a theme of soundtracks.

Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor! 7/12/2012

For this episode I was kind of lazy and just played my own music from my computer from a big chunk of music that I had put together for work music. It was fun though and I re-arranged the random songs as I went and added a few things for it to be a bit less random. Enjoy!

Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor! 7/5/2012, Am'rica Edition!

Happy Independence Day everyone! This show started just 3 hours after the 4th of July ended so I decided I had to have an America theme! Originally this was going to be a bunch of songs about America and that said America and/or U.S.A in them, but I had a lot of issues with finding the CDs or records for the songs I wanted.

Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor! 6/28/2012, and so much more!

I’ve been crazy busy the past couple weeks with work and radio shows and all sorts of stuff! So I took a while to put this up! I had my normal show on the 28th, I also was the DJ for the show Move Your Ass on Thursday the 21st! Also this last week I subbed for two different shows, Turn It Up With Amy Wilson and Bleached Meat with Brandok. So I am also posting those now. So much fun!

Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor! 6/21/2012

I had a lot of fun with this show! I decided that I wasn’t going to attempt to get a lot of different kinds of music like I usually do but was just going to play bands I really like and listen to a lot, with a few new things. I think it worked out quite well! I hope you enjoy it!

Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor! 6/14/2012

The latest episode of Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor! Not a lot of chatting from me in this one, I was rather tired! But I did pick out some fun music for your enjoyment!

Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor! 6/7/2012

Here is the latest episode of my radio show Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor! In this episode I have 2 special guests on the air with me, Ben and Bethany. It was a very interesting mix of songs we chose! Enjoy:

Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor! 5/31/2012

Hey there everyone! This week of Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor! is a special edition! Last Thursday was Bob Dylan’s 71st birthday (which I failed to realize at the time) so to celebrate I’m giving you all a show of all Bob Dylan! That’s right, 3 hours of our good friend Robert Zimmerman! Hurray!

Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor! 5/24/2012

Hello my blog readers. Here is the latest installment of my radio free-form show, Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor! I realized after the fact that today is Bob Dylan’s birthday! I was so upset when I found this out and hadn’t played ANY Bob Dylan during my show! So I think what I’ll do, to honor Bob Dylan, and just for funzies, is I will dedicate my next show to Bob Dylan!

Come On, Wake Up Ann Arbor! 5/17/2012

Well I was a little flustered at the start of this show, because I didn’t get into the station until about 10 minutes before my show started! Problem with building access and such. Still turned out well I think though, aside from a really big mistake of cutting off a song and leaving a lot of silence early in the show (oops!).

My First Radio Show!!

So I had my first ever radio show this last Thursday morning! It was really fun. I’m going to try posting my shows on here from now on so that those of you who aren’t awake at 3 in the morning can still listen to it! Let me know if you have any comments on what you liked or didn’t like or whatever!

I'm not Dead Yet!

So my sister Kathryn just asked me if I had been working on my church experiment, which got me to thinking about it again! Obviously, I haven’t been working on it, as you can see by my very empty-looking blog. I was all ready to dive into that idea, then spring break happened, and after spring break school got very busy, blah blah blah.

First Post

Hey everyone! Here is my first post on this blog EVER! So I have only gone to one church so far and the recording I got there wasn’t so great. I might just have some audio of me talking about the first church, or I might go back at some point and try to get some recordings of talking to people there.
